The woman touched the wound with her wrinkled fingers, and Yuri’s shoulders trembled.

“It’s deeper than before, isn’t it?” Noelle heard the old woman ask with a sigh.

“The stone can stop time, but it cannot heal this wound,” Yuri answered with sadness in her voice.

The woman scooped some of the pasty green liquid out of the pot. She patted it onto the wound, shaking her head.

“Yuri, when I first met you, I was an apprentice. It was my teacher who dressed your wound for you,” she said. “That was seventy years ago. I’m an old woman now, but you’re exactly the same now as you were then. Your time has stopped.”

She covered the entire wound with the paste. Then she returned the pot to the stove. She wiped her hands on a rag, then turned and looked at Yuri. Her dark eyes were grave.

“It is against nature to stop time, Yuri. Your wound grows deeper every day,” she said. “The medicine helps. But if you keep using the stone like this, the wound will eventually destroy your body.”

“I know,” Yuri replied, and her voice sounded tight and tired. “But there is something I must do.”

After a few minutes, the green liquid dried. The old woman carefully scraped it off. The wound looked less red and swollen—but it was still there.

Yuri climbed down from the stone platform. Suddenly, ten children barreled through the door. They circled Yuri, chattering with excitement.

“Yuri! Yuri!”

“When did you come?”

Noelle watched, curious. Some of the children looked as though they had just learned to walk; others appeared to be teenagers, like Yuri. They all looked clean and happy.

Yuri smiled at them. “I just got here. Majobaba[1] gave me some medicine.”

A little boy with curly hair ran up and hugged Yuri’s legs. “Hey, I can read stars now!” he boasted.

“I’m not surprised. You’re a smart little boy, Luda,” Yuri told him.

A little girl held out a rag doll to show Yuri. “Look, Yuri! See the clothes on this doll? I made them!” she said proudly.

Yuri picked up the doll and studied the clothes. “Wonderful, Rena!” she said. “You will make a great seamstress some day.”
